BakerAGE: 93 • Wilmington, DelawarePaul Baker, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 11, 2017.Paul was born on January 16, 1924 in the coal mining town of Tower City, Pa. He graduated from Tower City High School and went on to attend Kutztown State College. He served honorably in the United States
Army in both
World War II and the
Korean War and was a 72 year continuous member of American Legion Post 468. After the war he moved to Wilmington, DE, where he worked for the DuPont Company at the Experimental Station location. He retired from DuPont in 1985 after 32 years of service.After retirement Paul volunteered his time at Zion Lutheran Church in Wilmington where he spent 21 years as their Food Pantry coordinator. After stepping down as the coordinator he continued to assist with the food pantry right up until his death. He and his wife of 60 years, Kathryn, traveled extensively, visiting Europe and many of the states in the United States. They also took many cruises with their favorite cruise being to the Hawaiian Islands. He also was an avid walker. Later in life he and his friends would walk at the Christiana Mall with all their walks ending with a Danish and a cup of coffee at the food court. He was predeceased by his wife, Kathryn, and all 4 of his siblings, Mae, Ross, Roy, and Jane. He is survived by his 3 sons, Paul, Bob (Nini), and Gary, all of Wilmington. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, Bryan Baker (Laura), Keri Henderson (Jason), and Erin Hawthorne (Ryan). He was affectionately known as "Poppoppop" to his 6 great grandchildren, Aubrey, Ella, Briella, Alexa, Jameson, and Kayla.The family would like to thank Delaware Hospice, his nurse Beth, and all the aides, especially Tamika and Chasity, for their compassion and care during Paul's short illness.Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service which will be held on Monday, August 21, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church, 2101 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE. Visitation will be at 1:00 and the service will be at 2:00. The burial will be private at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
