Wendell Lee Billups, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on October 9, 2024, in her hometown of Richmond, Illinois, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on March 9, 1948, to William and Eleanor Billups, Wendell grew up in a close-knit family where he learned the values of kindness, compassion, and hard work. He was a proud graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned a degree in education. Wendell dedicated his life to teaching and nurturing young minds as an elementary school teacher in the Virginia Public Schools for over 35 years.
Wendell had an extraordinary ability to connect with children, fostering a love for learning that shaped the lives of thousands of students. His classroom was a place of creativity, laughter, and encouragement, and his impact was felt long after his students moved on. He received numerous awards throughout his career, including Teacher of the Year in 1995, a testament to his commitment to education.
Outside the classroom, Wendell was known for his love of gardening and his beautiful flower beds, which brought joy to all who passed by his home. He was also an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church community, where he volunteered his time with the outreach program, helping those in need. His unwavering faith and dedication to service were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Wendell is survived by his three children, Jennifer Billups (Michael), Frank Billups (Rebecca), and Susan Billups (Mark); his six grandchildren, Olivia, Jack, Ethan, Sophie, Courtney, Ella, and Hannah; and his sister, Patricia Billups. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Henry Billups.
A funeral mass will be held in Wendell's honor on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richmond, Virginia. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a reception at the church hall immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Wendell's name, as this cause was dear to his heart.
Margaret will be remembered for her generous spirit, her love of family, and her commitment to making the world a brighter place, one student at a time.
