Wayne E. Vaughan, age 92, a lifelong resident of East Tawas, and in retirement, Melbourn Beach, Fla., died on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015 at Tendercare Nursing Home. He was born on May 15, 1923 in East Tawas to the late George and Bernice Vaughan (Wright). Wayne served in the Merchant Marines and the United States Army before being honorably discharged. He later worked for 26 years and retired as an assistant manager from the East Tawas A&P store.Wayne was also a self employed contractor and has built over 50 homes in the area. He also was on the East Tawas Parks Board and helped develop the parks people enjoy today. Wayne was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and traveling. Wayne was very proud to have taken the Veterans Honors Flight to Washington D.C. to visit military monuments in 2013. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Vaughan (Cooper), whom he married in East Tawas on April 21, 1950. Wayne is also survived by his two daughters, Susan and husband David Rose of Pentwater and Carol and husband John Church of Ludington; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Stonehouse and Roberta Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rhea Poppe. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Aug. 24 at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in East Tawas. The family will receive friends prior from 10 to 11 a.m. Rev. Matthew Carpenter will officiate and inurnment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery in East Tawas.
