Southworth, Walter Glidden.Walter Glidden Southworth, 92, of Southbury, died at his Pomperaug Woods home on November 26, 2016. Walter was born on October 19, 1924, in Englewood, New Jersey, to Augustus Reynell Southworth and Florence Lyman Southworth. Walter was predeceased by his siblings Augustus R. Southworth, Jr., Robert Lyman Southworth, and Elizabeth Southworth Marsh. He attended the Englewood School for Boys, studied at Columbia University, and enlisted in the Coast Guard to serve his country in World War II. Walter married Jane Fenner Ludington on July 15, 1950, at the Ludington family farm in Holley, New York. Walter and Jane had three children and six grandchildren. He is survived by Lynn Voight (Keith) of Bethesda, Maryland, Janet Maley (Bill) of Oxford, Connecticut, Jill Craft (Ken) of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, and grandchildren Benjamin Voight, David Maley, Sarah Maley, Matthew Maley, Lauren Craft (Kelly Mahoney) and Jeff Craft as well as many nieces and nephews. Walter and Jane lost an infant son, David, in 1960. Walter developed a love for cars at an early age. He learned to drive the family car at age 8. Following in the footsteps of his pioneering grandfather and father, Walter worked in the automobile industry for his entire adult life. He joined the family businesses -- the Glidden Buick Corporation and the New Milford Tractor Company. He subsequently founded Walter G. Southworth, Inc., a successful Chrysler, Plymouth, Renault, Peugeot, and Triumph car dealership. The National Association of Automobile Dealers awarded him the distinguished TIME Dealer of the Year. Walter also understood the importance of serving his community. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors at the New Milford Hospital. In collaboration with a group of New Milford business people, he founded the New Milford Bank and Trust. He served as a deacon and treasurer at the First Congregational Church. He also taught his daughters the importance of a firm handshake. Avid boaters, Walter and Jane spent much of their leisure time enjoying the company of family and friends on Candlewood Lake and Long Island Sound. Memorial and burial services will be private.
