VIOLA L. SIGAFUS, 90 APPLE RIVER - Viola L. Sigafus, 90, formerly of Apple River, IL, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Washington Christian Village in Washington, IL. She was born on June 19, 1922, in Scales Mound, IL, to Frederick and Louise (Scheele) Hesselbacher. Viola married Robert Leroy Sigafus on February 12, 1942. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1958. Viola continued to run the farm until her oldest son took over when he got married in 1966. At that time, she continued to run a smaller farm taking care of chickens, pigs, beef cows, and her family. She then went to work for Hartzell's IGA, where she worked over 30 years. She was lovingly referred to by her great-grandchildren as "Grandma Chicken." It was a pleasure for her to cook and make special Saturday morning breakfasts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Viola was a member of the Ladies Aide and the Elizabeth Circle of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, where she attended. In addition to making quilts for the church, she lovingly made a quilt for every grandchild's' graduation, wedding, and the birth of the great-grandchildren. Quilting brought her great joy. Viola is survived by 3 sons, Glenn (Marcia) Sigafus of Stockton, IL, Terry (Judy) of Galena, IL, and Tom (Cynthia) of Monroe, WI; daughter, Janis Sigafus of Metamora, IL; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Myrna Vandedrink of Rochester, MN; sister-in-law, Kay Hesselbacher of Apple River, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; 5 brothers, Alvin, Ralph, Adam, Loren, Glenn; and 1 sister, Eleanor Winters. Services will be held at noon Friday, June 7, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Apple River, IL, located on the Wolfram farm. Pastor Barbara Rapp will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Bartell-Leamon Funeral Home in Warren, IL. Interment will be at the St. John's Cemetery in Scales Mound, IL.
