This obituary is administered by:

Verna Mae Tobin, age 95, was born on Nov. 22, 1920 and passed away on Nov. 23, 2015 at Tawas Village. Born in Chatham, Ontario, Verna began her teaching career at age 20 in a one-room school house in Ontario. After World War II ended, she met Gordon Tobin and was married in 1946 in Toronto. Verna and Gordon built a wonderful life throughout their 56 year marriage in the Downriver area and as snowbirds in Florida until Gordon died in 2002. Verna retired in 1982 from the Southgate Public School System where she taught fourth grade. She enjoyed reading to her students both as a teacher and as a volunteer at Whittemore-Prescott Elementary School. Everyone who knew Verna knew about her favorite book, Anne of Green Gables, which she read to her students many times over the years. Verna was a member of Whittemore United Methodist Church and enjoyed social activities with her many friends. Surviving Verna are her three children, Susan, Jay and Kyle (Linda); along with six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and her sister, Jean, in Chatham, Ontario. A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at Saints Cemetery in Whittemore. Friends are welcome to attend.
