INDEPENDENCE – Vera A. Holtz, 90 years old, of Independence, died on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at ABCM Rehab. Center Independence – East Campus, in Independence. She was born on January 2, 1926, in Elkhorn, the daughter of Andrew Christian and Helga (Leistad) Lange. On June 10, 1945, she and Elvin Fred Holtz were married in Elkhorn. Mrs. Holtz graduated from high school in Elkhorn and then, earned her B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, in 1961. She was a teacher from 1943 until 1992. Mrs. Holtz was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence and Chapter BD P.E.O. She enjoyed playing Bridge, and reading and writing. And she was involved in the effort to build a new library building in Independence.Mrs. Holtz is survived by one daughter, Sheryl Mace of Independence; two sons, Steven (Kathy) Holtz of Montgomery, Mo., and Andrew (Kristen) Holtz of Boise, Idaho: eight grandchildren: Molly (Dwayne) Martin, Katie (J.D.) Wolf, Sarah (Chris) Talley, Heidi Holtz, and Alyssa, Eric, Landon, and Logan Holtz; and seven great grandchildren: Jacob, Olivia, Sophie, Talia, and Jackson Wolf, and Elizabeth and Anna Talley. She is also survived by two sisters, Norma (Richard) Nelson of Elkhorn, and Carolyn (Joe) Mason of White Lake, Mich.; a brother, Russell (Joan) Lange of Elkhorn; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Bonnie Sellner.In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Gretchen Mace; and two brothers: Jack Lange and Mark Lange.Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence. Friends called for visitation from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
