HAMLET, N.C. — Thomas Jones Jr, 92, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.

Son of the late Thomas Jones Sr. and Viola Jones Moore, he was was born on March 21, 1922 in Hamlet. He joined First Baptist Church on West Avenue in Hamlet where he served on the trustee board, church treasurer and the Layman League. He later joined New Hope Baptist Church. He worked for Seaboard Coastline Railroad for 40 years, McEachern Funeral Home and Nelson Funeral Home. He also served in the U.S. Navy for two years. For a number of years, he worked for Railroad Express.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Mildred Teal Jones; children, Arthur Lewis Jones of Rockingham, Joyce Ann Jones Edwards of Rockingham, Thomasina Jones Matthews of Baltimore, Md., Thomas Jones III of Bel Air, Md., Denise Jones Taylor of Durham, Pamela Jones Terry of Durham and Milldred Jones McSween of Rockingham; two sisters, Cora Lee Jackson of Washington D.C. and Claudette King of Houston, Texas; four sons-in-law, Calvin Matthews, William Taylor, Prince Terry and Robert McSween; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Jones of Bel Air, Md.; one brother-in-law, Rudolph Goodwin; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A wake will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday at New Hope Baptist Church and a public viewing will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday at Nelson Funeral Service of Rockingham.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church where the Rev. John Jackson is pastor and the Rev. T.R. Davis will be officiating.
