Susan Camphouse passed away in San Gabriel, California on August 24, 2016.Susan was born on January 29, 1948 to S. Seward "Bud" and Ruth Van Cleave Spencer in Los Angeles, California. She was raised in San Gabriel and graduated from San Gabriel High School in 1966. She continued her education at the University of Southern California and earned both her Bachelor and Master degrees. In 1966 through a Rotary International Youth Exchange program she met John Camphouse and they had an opportunity to travel through Europe including a special Rotary youth gathering in Norway. They dated thereafter and were married on February 20, 1971. They welcomed a son, David, in 1974 and a daughter, Kathleen, in 1977 before moving to Bishop in 1979. Their daughter, Deborah, was born in 1981.Susan taught special education at the Los Angeles City Schools beginning in 1970 until the birth of their son David. In Bishop she devoted herself to raising her children but returned to teaching in 1986 with Bishop Union Elementary Schools with classes primarily at Home Street Middle School focusing on special education with some occasional assignments in computer, GATE, in-school-suspension, math, and social studies. She retired in 2007.Susan loved Jesus Christ and that love found expression in her character and her activities. She was kind-hearted, generous, thoughtful, and caring. She was always thinking of others; she wanted them to be happy, safe, provided for and to know they were important and loved. She had a heart for the marginalized. She dedicated her life to special education and serving students with physical and mental challenges; in doing so, she also taught others to be kinder, more understanding, and more caring toward those same students.Through the years she served as a leader in Girl Scouts and and the Boy Scouts and as a member of and an officer in the Junior Women's Improvement Club. She and John served as foster parents for a number of years; they hosted an American Field Service student from Eqypt in 1991 and worked actively with the local AFS chapter here in Bishop for many years; they also worked with the Christmas Project of the PTA and together were honored with the Lifetime Service Award; they served together on staff with Camp Joy; and they participated for a number of years with disaster relief work on the Gulf Coast and the East Coast. Sue and John enjoyed square dancing and round dancing with the Calectric Squares.Susan was outgoing and gregarious. She never met a stranger. She loved people -- young and old. She was creative, talented, and incredibly faithful. She was active with the Bishop First United Methodist Church and while she regularly served in various leadership positions in the church, she did not hesitate to help with decorating, singing, cleaning, cooking, and gardening -- even in the last couple of years when she was confined to a wheelchair.Susan was predeceased by her parents and by her niece, Allison Powell. She is survived by her husband, John; by her son, David Camphouse and his wife Anna of Walnut, California, and their children, Sophia, Paul, and John; her daughter, Kathy and husband Scott Strickman of New York City and their children Noah, Orli, and Asaph; her daughter, Debbie and husband Rick Sperry of Moscow, Idaho, and their children Ruth and Steven; and by her brother, Will Spencer and his wife Dayle of Estes Park, Colorado.
