Steven R. AndersonCliveSteven Rood Anderson, 77, of St. Joseph, Missouri, raised in Riverton, Iowa, passed away July 10, 2017. Visitation will be at the Riverton United Methodist Church,705 I St., Riverton, IA 51650, from 12 noon on Friday, July 14th, with a service to follow at 2pm. Steven Rood Anderson was born on April 14, 1940 at the Hamburg Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa to Robert Valderman Anderson and Hazel Louise Marie (Swanson) Anderson of Riverton, Iowa. After graduating from Riverton High School, Steve attended Northwest Missouri State College and eventually graduated from Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska. During his eight yearlong collegiate endeavor, he spent his off months (and then some) helping his father and uncle on the farm in Riverton and joining the Forest Service as a Smokejumper in Montana, amassing 81 jumps including 51 fire jumps. In his words, "the hardest working, best men to be around" in any walk of life, provided all who knew him, a lifetime of nearly questionable tales heard and overheard again. In 1970, Steven married Connie Jo Freeman of Essex, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with three children: Tobin Rood, Steven Tucker, and Sarah Lynn. Steve's discipline and passion for family was the foundation of his life. And, his competitive spirit extended beyond that into teaching and coaching basketball. In his legendary thirty year coaching career, spanning from Iowa to South Dakota to New York, he accrued a remarkable record including various conference and state appearances and titles. His work has been recognized by his induction into the Interstate 35 Hall of Fame in Iowa as well as the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.Steve is survived by his son, Tobin Anderson, his wife, Jodi Anderson and their two children, Bryce and Alexa of Tappan, NY; son, Steven Tucker Anderson, his wife, Jessica Anderson and her two children, Koiy and Tatum of Des Moines; daughter, Sarah Lynn Anderson of Philadelphia, PA; sister Judith Anderson of Shenandoah, IA; sister, Jean Anderson Volpe, her husband, Joseph Volpe, of Sarasota, FL; niece, Anna Judith Margaret Volpe of New York, NY, and loved cousins and many close friends. Steve was preceded in death by his former spouse, Connie Jo Freeman of Essex, Iowa; his grandparents, Alma and Henry Swanson and Anna and Albert Anderson; parents, Hazel and Robert Anderson.
