STEPHEN R. GRAY, 62 LAKE CARROLL - Stephen R. Gray, 62, of Lake Carroll, died Saturday, December 12, 2015 at FHN Memorial Hospital. Stephen was born on June 19, 1953 in Freeport, the son of Robert and Nancy (Ryan) Gray. He married Carol Hartman on May 20th 1995 in Freeport. Stephen was a 1971 graduate of Freeport High School where he was a member of the Football, Basketball, and Track teams and was also in the band. He worked as a plumber for 40 years and owned and operated Steve Gray Plumbing and Heating from 1998-2013. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he was a very active member. He served as Dean of Elder, Chairman of Properties, sang in the choir, served as a bus driver, and was active in BASIC's. He enjoyed fishing, boating, swimming, bowling, motorcycles, playing cards, and following the Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls. He loved animals. Steve was a member of the Elks Lodge and DEMOLAY. He coached baseball, Jr. Tackle, and coached basketball at Immanuel Lutheran. He was a Highland Cougar sponsor and supporter. Most of all Stephen loved to spend time with all of his family. Surviving are his wife, Carol Gray of Lake Carroll; son, Brian Gray of Lake Carroll; sister, Susan (Dan) White of Freeport; brother, David (Fawn) Gray of Freeport; sister-in-law, Janis (Wayne) Kurth of Lena; nephews and nieces, Paul (Melissa) Lamm, Thomas (Amanda) Lamm, Carl (Jessica) Kurth, Robert (Annie) Kurth, James (Nikki fiancée) Kurth, Elizabeth Kurth, Erick (Teagan fiancée) Kurth, Jonathan (Ashley) Kurth, Leesa Kurth (Casey Gerke), and Daniel Kurth. Also surviving is Rose Gray of Freeport. He was preceded in death by parents, and brother-in-law, Earl D. Hartman. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, December 17, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Freeport. Rev Richard O. Schultz, Rev. Dr. Willis Schwichtenberg, and Rev. Paul Lamm will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. also at Immanuel Lutheran. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in his memory.
