Multhauf, Shirley E.Shirley Evert Multhauf, age 89, passed away on November 5, 2016 at home in Stevens Point, Wisconsin surrounded by her family. The cause of death was the debilitating effects of cancer. She was born on April 23, 1927 near Mora, Minnesota, the daughter of the late Fred & Emma (McCall) Evert. Later the family moved to West Allis, Wisconsin where her father sought work during the Great Depression. He was working at an ice company when the company owners realized her parents were both business schooled farmers. The owners asked Shirley's father to manage a Dairy Farm for them near Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.Shirley was the first of the 3 Belles of Sunny Lea Farm. The other 2 Belles were her sisters JoAnne and Fredericka. Her parents instilled the great value of a good education in all the girls. She attended the one room school house down the road until it was time to attend Oconomowoc High School. After high school, she worked as a secretary at National Coal and Ice Company in Milwaukee. After this employment, she attended what is now UW-Oshkosh. Shirley graduated in 1949. Like so many of her generation, it was the start of a better life than of those who preceded her.It was in Oshkosh that she met and later married Delmar "Del" C. Multhauf . She was proud of the fact that she helped him get his PhD's from Columbia University in New York City. During this time she was an elementary school
teacher in New Jersey. She suspended her career to start a family, son Charles in 1955 and a daughter Michele in 1962. She followed Del from University to University while he worked up the academic ladder from Danbury, Connecticut, to Mankato, Minnesota, to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and at last to Stevens Point, WI. In 1966 they moved to Stevens Point where Del taught geography and other earth sciences at UW-Stevens Point. In 1967 she resumed her career with the Stevens Point School system. She taught 1st grade at Roosevelt Elementary School for many years. After receiving her Master's degree in education from UWSP, she became a Reading Specialist in the Stevens Point School system. One of Shirley's most enjoyable hobbies was quilting. She created many award winning quilts. Crossword puzzles were a favorite past time of hers, always asking others what word would fit. She also collected stamps and books. A large selection of children's books, as well as her favorite by Clement C. Moore "The Night Before Christmas" filled the shelves. While recovering from
Breast Cancer, she became interested in Genealogy. Her side of the family was especially important to her. She was able to trace her ancestry back through the American Revolution. In doing so, this qualified her to join the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Her time spent with the DAR allowed her to continue a lifetime of helping others. Shirley journeyed from mother, to teacher, to substitute teacher, to assisting with Portage County elder care where she was a Patient Guardian. Volunteer time with the DAR was a rewarding culmination of her service to othersAs a retired teacher, she became a very active member of SPARTA (Stevens Point Area Retired Teachers Association). In her mind, a teacher never really retires. She worked diligently to improve the after careers of her fellow educators. She chaired several committees and designed the logo for SPARTA, still in use today, with an explanation and significance of it's creation.Historically minded, Shirley was very active with the Portage County Historical Society. She spent much time and effort with fellow retired teachers and others, working on local historical projects. The creation of the educational program with 3rd and 4th grade lesson plans and activities for the Hei Corner School at Heritage Park, Plover, was done with her involvement. At Hei Corner School, students learned what it was like to attend a one-room school house.Shirley is survived by son, Charles (Paulette) of Sheboygan Falls; daughter, Michele (Fred) Abler of Lake Delton; sister, Fredricka (Anton Jr.) Noordyk of Plymouth; grand puppies, Mr.B (Michele and Fred Abler), Riley (Charles and Paulette Multhauf). She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred & Emma Evert; sister, JoAnne (Robert) Engwall.A Funeral Service will be held, 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Boston Funeral Home.
