ONEIDA >> Sherwood D. Coffin, age 92, a resident of the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, Nov. 25, 2016 at the Extended Care Facility with his loving family at his side.He was born on Dec. 18, 1923 in Lyons Falls, N.Y. a son of the late Duane L. and Estey (Grower) Coffin and attended local schools.On Dec. 11, 1942 Sherwood enlisted with the United States Marines where he was engaged in action from Nov. 1, 1943 till Dec. 15, 1943 on Cape Torokina and from Oct. 27, 1943 till March 15, 1944 he served during the consolidation of the Northern Solomons. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1945.Prior to his retirement Sherwood was employed as a machinist with the Lucas Aerospace Corporation.He was a member of the Marine Corps League Oneida Detachment.Surviving are his nine children, Eunice (Pete) Doroshenko of Morrisville, Linda Armstrong Blinn of Rome, Michael Coffin (Sheila Walker) of Oneida, Duane (Norma) Coffin of Elgin, Okla., Edward (Peggy) Coffin of Sauquoit, Stephen (Christine) Coffin of Marcy, Pamela Mackey of Rome, Kevin (Deborah) Coffin of Marcy and Brenda McGrath (Ronald Tarry) of Oneida; one brother and sister-in-law, Lambert (Geraldine) Coffin of Antwerp, N.Y.; 42 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his longtime companion, Helen Fizette of Sherrill and several nieces and nephews.Sherwood was preceded in death by his wife, Oda Coffin; son, Sherwood D. Coffin Jr.; daughter, Deborah Coffin; granddaughter, Lisa Doroshenko Harris; two sons-in-law, Richard Mackey and Barry Armstrong, and four sisters and three brothers.Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front St., Vernon. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 2, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in Floyd Cemetery, Floyd, N.Y.
