Sergia Obiscuro Sablada, 96, died on January 30, 2015, at her home in Portland, OR surrounded by her loving family. One of six siblings, she was born on October 22, 1918, in Carigara, Leyte (Philippines) to Hipolito and Isabel (Agon) Obiscuro. For 37 years, she lived with her family in Juneau, AK until moving to Portland in 2008. Due to her entrepreneurial spirit, she was able to raise her two young children in Leyte after the death of her husband during World War II. In 1948, she moved to Manila to seek greater opportunity for her family. For her children, she made the impossible possible through hard work, dedication, and her confident character. Because she found pleasure in taking care of others, her working life centered upon being a nanny, housekeeper, chef, and at times bartender for American families in the Philippines. Her courage and adventuresome nature inspired her children to emigrate to the United States. Sergia followed her children to Alaska in 1971, and then became a citizen in 1978. In Juneau, she worked at the Hilton Hotel for several years, where she enjoyed the camaraderie of her co-workers and the satisfaction of doing her job well. Her greatest pleasure was caring for children, whether they were her own grandchildren, neighbor's children, or later her great-grandchildren. Even in her later years, she had the strength and energy to joyfully look after her youngest great-grandchildren. She was happiest when she was caring for others or cooking for her family and friends. Many who knew her fondly called her "Grandma".She is survived by her daughter, Nenita Sablada, of Portland, OR; six grandchildren, Joseph Sablada (Andrea), Maria Lourdes "Malou" Sabalda, Ailene Jackson (Evan), Alenita Danner (Jim), Kamryn Brooks (Kendrick), and John Sablada; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jazmin, Jaymee, Jayda, and Jalen Jackson; Gracie, Isabel, and Jameson Danner; and DJ, Elijah, and Jacob Brooks; her sister, Lourdes Villasin; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also loved Alfonso Soriano and Eufemia Yadao as if they were her own children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Noberto, who died in 1942 in the Philippines and her son, Federico, who died in 1996 also in the Philippines. Also preceding her in death were her siblings Macaria Obiscuro Lloren, Leonito Agon Obiscuro, Hipolita Agon Obiscuro, and Leonora Agon Obiscuro.A viewing service and novena will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 13, at Alaskan Memorial Park.
