Ruth Poston Lisk, 79, passed away Nov. 17, 2014, at Casa D'Amore Assisted Living Center in League City, Texas. Ruth was a long-term resident of Boone, N.C., prior to relocating to Texas several years ago.
Ruth was born on Nov. 15, 1935 in Rock Hill, S.C. She grew up in Hamlet, N.C., one of six children born to Charles and Margaret Poston. She attended college at Pfeiffer College, where she met her future husband, Richard (Dick) Norman Lisk.
Ruth and Dick were married and eventually settled in Boone as lifelong residents. Following the birth of their two children, Ruth completed her undergraduate and master's degrees in education at Appalachian State University. She was dedicated to educating children and taught elementary school for 20 years in the Watauga County area. Ruth was an active member of the N.C. Association of Educators and served in numerous leadership positions of that organization. Ruth was very active in the local community, was a dedicated member of the Boone United Methodist Church Circle 6, The Order of the Eastern Star, the DAR and the John Barden Kiwanis Club. During later years, as a resident of Appalachian Brian Estates, she founded a recycling program for the residents and was recognized by the town of Boone for her commitment to environmental conservation.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Dick; and her three brothers, Charles, Jimmy and Bobby.
She is survived by her sisters, Edith Larsen and Nell Brown; and sister-in-law, Hilde Poston. Ruth is also survived by her two children, Rick Lisk and wife Carol of Houston, Texas, and Jan Ward of Boone; as well as four grandchildren, Holly Ward of Kernersville, N.C., Matt Ward and wife Anna of San Antonio, Texas, Michael Lisk of College Station, Texas and Dana Lisk of Washington, D.C.
A memorial service for Ruth will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4 at Boone United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends and loved ones following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to The Order of the Eastern Star, in care of Louise Ward, 308 Private Drive, Sugar Grove, NC 28679 or to Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Market Boulevard, Boone, NC 28607.
