Ruth CarlonPoughkeepsie - "I am the resurrection and the life sayeth the Lord, though we may die, we shall live." Ruth was called to her eternal Home on Saturday, January 28th, 2017. Ruth was born on May 9th, 1928 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany to Wilhelm and Katharine Schmidt. Ruth was the youngest of five children. After World War II she attended private schools for drama and phonetics and was employed by the Astoria Theatre in Mannheim as an actress. After the collapse of the German economy, Ruth came to the United States in 1951. She met and married Frank T. Carlon. They were married 58 years. Throughout her life, Ruth was an active member of the local churches she attended in Poughkeepsie and Sarasota, Florida. Ruth was a songwriter and poet. Ruth was inspired by her love for this country to compose her song, "My America", which was dedicated to the people of Poughkeepsie in 1976. In 1977 Ruth wrote, "Between Gardens and Deserts", her first volume of poetry in English. In 1979 Ruth wrote the "American Unity Prayer" for the release of the hostages in Iran. In 1980 the "American Unity Prayer" was recorded into the Congressional Record in Washington D.C. Above all, Ruth was a devoted wife and mother. Ruth and her husband Frank enjoyed many camping trips with their children at Taconic State Park. They particularly enjoyed summer vacations with their children in Long Island visiting Ruth's sister Katherine and her husband Kurt Sattel. We will deeply miss this spirited woman. Ruth is survived by her four children and their spouses; Mary (Vincent) Eagan, Frank R. Carlon, Thomas (Colleen) Carlon, and Katherine (Ronald) Frishmuth, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews both in the United States and Germany. May she rest in peace. Calling hours will be Friday, February 3, 2017 from 5-7pm at Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, Inc. 39 S. Hamilton St, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. 845-452-1840. Flowers welcomed.
