Roy Frederick Bergstrom Jr., 69, of Grant Township, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015 at Lakeview Manor Healthcare Center in Tawas City with his family by his side. Roy was born on April 27, 1946 in Detroit to Roy and Barbara (Foote) Bergstrom Sr. He graduated from Oscoda High School in the Class of 1964, and then continued his education at Shelton State Trade School in Tuscaloosa, Ala. for two years where he studied the skill of a machinist. Roy was employed by Valcraft Corporation in East Tawas for about 19 1/2 years. He then served through the Iosco County Sheriff's Department in the Emergency Management Program for several years. Roy later was employed by the Globe Fire Sprinkler Company in Standish for approximately 10 years, and later he worked at Advanced Machine Company in Tawas City for a short while. Roy had a passion for serving his community and demonstrated that desire by serving 21 years on the Grant Township Fire Department. He served on the department as assistant chief for 11 years, and was promoted to fire chief in 1991 and served in that capacity until 1992. Roy was an avid outdoorsman and he truly enjoyed hunting and the tradition that goes along with the sport. He was also actively involved as a member at Grace Lutheran Church in East Tawas. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. Roy married his wife and best friend, Vera (McDuff) in Louisiana on Oct. 4, 1966. Together they celebrated 49 beautiful years of marriage. Roy is survived by his beloved wife, Vera Bergstrom; his loving daughter, Cheryl (Don) Sheridan Jr. of Tawas City; three grandchildren, Christian Sheridan, Stacie (Cal) Hewitt and Jason Sheridan; four great grandchildren, Jameson, Jaxen, Cabela and Bruce; one brother-in-law, Charles (Debbie) McDuff; one sister-in-law, Margaret House; several nieces, nephews and special friends. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lani Snider; three brothers in law, Richard C. Snider, Gresham House and Harold Brice; and a sister-in-law, Mary Brice. His family will welcome friends at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday for visitation. Funeral services will take place at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Matthew Carpenter officiating.
