Robert William "Skeets" Kennedy, 93, of Edgewater, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016 at home surrounded by his immediate family and caregiver, Kelly Lamotte. Skeets was born on July 24, 1923 in Terre Haute, Indiana. His older sister gave him his nickname after the Sunday comic character "Skeezix" in Gasoline Alley who has aged along with Skeets. As an Army paratrooper in World War II, he was a member of the 517th Attack Squadron and fought in France, Italy and in the deep snow at "The Battle of the Bulge". Since 1952, Skeets wore many hats in Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach. You may have known him over the years as Kennedy Tile, one of the founders of the Edgewater Volunteer Fire Dept., an actor at New Smyrna Beach Little Theatre or a member of the High Crew in the VAB building at Cape Kennedy. Perhaps you knew him from skiing the slopes of Colorado and Utah making his last run at age 80! Most likely you knew Skeets from his business, Magnolia Mower in New Smyrna Beach where he worked with his wife "Mickey" and son John until his retirement in 1989. He was a gifted man with constant quick humor and the natural ability to create, build or repair anything his mind could conceive. Skeets is survived by his wife and sweetheart of 70 years, Ruth "Mickey" Kennedy; his two children, John (Mary Patt) Kennedy of Port Orange and Sandy (Buren) Alderman of New Smyrna Beach; five grandchildren, Melissa Gollegly of Seattle, WA, Jana (Scott) Moore of Edgewater, Jason (Jennifer) Kennedy of Chesterfield, VA, Justin (Susan) Kennedy of Edgewater and Jonathan (Julia) Kennedy of Pleasanton, CA and twelve terrific great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the many caregivers and especially the caring professionals at VITAS Hospice for the excellent care given to Skeets. There will be no service scheduled at this time.
