Robert K. GloyeskeRobert Kenneth Gloyeske, 87, passed away on October 31, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 24, 1926 to the late Joseph and Margaret Gloyeske in Valparaiso, IN and was preceeded in death by his only sibling, Irene Kopp. He graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1944. Robert served in the
United States Navy during
WWII from 1945 - 1946. He graduated from the
University of Michigan in 1951 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and began his career at Holibird & Root in Chicago, IL.Robert met Kathleen Mary Kaye on his first day at Michigan while at a dance at the Newman Center and they married on February 2, 1952. They relocated to Lafayette, IN where Robert began his long career with Walter Scholer & Associates. During his 50 year career at Scholer, he served as design architect, project architect, and head of the architectural department. In 1972 he became President and served as Chairman of the Board from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. Robert was most proud of several architectural achievements which include Emens Auditorium at Ball State University, Mackey Arena at
Purdue University and the renovation of Saint Mary Cathedral in Lafayette which received an AIA Indiana 2001 Honor Award. Pope John Paul II conferred the medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice to Robert for exceptional works and conspicuous devotion. The medal is a papal honor conferred on laity who distinguish themselves by providing exceptional service to the church. Robert served on the Board of United Way, Lay Advisory Board of St. Elizabeth Hospital, and the Tippecanoe County Zoning Advisory Board. He also served on the Lafayette Diocesan Building Commission and the State Board for Registration for Architects. His proudest achievement was his seven children, Ken (Barb), Beth Fleenor (Dave), Steve (Linda), Maggie, Kate Halsmer (Dominic), John (Julie), Rob (Vandana). Robert also had 16 grandchildren, Kelly, Brian, Marc, Andrew, Maureen, Laura, Stephanie, Rebecca, Hayden, Nicholas, Christina, Mary Kate, Josie, Jordan, Madison, Nikhil, and Rajan and two great grandchildren, Evan and Addison. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 3, from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. followed by a Vespers Service at 7:00 p.m. at Saint Mary Cathedral. A Catholic Mass of Burial, officiated by the Most Reverend William L. Higi, Bishop Emeritus, and Fr. Jeff Martin will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4. All services will be held at Saint Mary Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lafayette Catholic Schools or Saint Mary Cathedral.
