Dr. Robert "Bob" A. WinterAGE: 74 • West OrangeDr. Robert "Bob" A. Winter, who served as Montville Township and Wayne Township Public Schools Superintendent, died on October 3, 2017 in Cypress, TX, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bonnie, his three children, Bryan Winter (Elizabeth), Melissa Holsberg (Dan) and Jeffrey Winter; and his four beloved grandchildren, Jake, Emma, Catherine and Anna. He is also survived by his brother, James Winter (Ellen), and many nieces, nephews and cousins.Bob was born on August 21, 1943 in West Orange, New Jersey and attended Our Lady of the Valley Catholic High School. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history From Montclair State College in 1965, where he was Senior Class and Senate Fraternity President. Bob obtained his master's degree from Seton Hall University in 1969 and a Doctorate of Education in 1979 from Rutgers University.Bob was a tireless advocate for education. He dedicated his life to this worthy cause, and he leaves behind a legacy of learning, achievement, and the idea that the students should always come first.He served as a grade-school teacher in the Newark Public Schools, a social studies teacher at Boonton High School (1966-1971), and worked as a Vice Principal in Westmont, New Jersey (1971-1972).In 1972, Bob went to the Montville Township Public Schools, where he served as Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and eventually Superintendent of Schools until 1987. His leadership in Montville improved programs, encouraged school faculty to advance their teaching skills, and heightened district educational goals. In 1987, Bob was recruited from Montville to lead the Wayne Township Public Schools as Superintendent of Education. In 1994, Bob move to Alabama to become the Superintendent of the Tuscaloosa City Schools. While in Tuscaloosa, Bob championed education for all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. Bob finished his career in education by serving as the Superintendent of the Glynn County Public Schools in St. Simons Island, Georgia.During his distinguished career, Bob served as President of the New Jersey Association of School Administrators. He was a long-time officer and member of the Executive Committee of the American Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, and Kappa Delta Pi. He was awarded the Rutgers University Distinguished Alumni Service Award and appointed by the Governor of New Jersey to chair the State Education Ethics Commission. Upon retirement, Bob enjoyed playing golf, riding horses, and even won a ribbon in a horse riding competition, and being a grandfather. He and Bonnie traveled the world, and he even bungee-jumped off the highest skyscraper in New Zealand.A memorial service for Dr. Winter will be held graveside on Saturday November 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
