Phyllis Norine Loeber passed away on the evening of November 21, 2016 at the age of 92. Phyllis was born on February 20, 1924 in Sacramento to Gladys and Richard Monro. She grew up an only child in the Curtis Park neighborhood and graduated from McClatchy High School in 1942. Phyllis often rode her horse throughout the wide open spaces of Land Park. A good friend exposed her to flying in a J-3 Cub in 1943 which would become a significant part of Phyllis' amazing, full life. She continued flying and received her pilot's license in 1946. She met Rex Cantrell while working at Mather Field and the two married, settled in Santa Rosa and raised 4 children. After 12 years of being a stay-at-home mom, Phyllis continued flying in Santa Rosa and became a flight instructor in 1961. She taught hundreds of men and women (including 3 of her 4 children) to fly throughout the 60's and 70's accumulating over 10,000 logged flying hours. She was an accomplished aerobatic and air-race pilot, competing in five "Powder Puff Derby" all women's transcontinental air races. She became an excellent aerobatic pilot in her Pitts Special biplane as well. Above all of her flying accomplishments, Phyllis' children always came first. She loved her family beyond limits and lived life following her dreams yet compassionate for her family. Phyllis eventually moved to Lodi in 2004 to be near her son, Ken Cantrell and his family. She enjoyed many hobbies including bible study, sewing, quilting, knitting and she became a very talented painting artist as well.
