Phillip Jeffrey BalmaFebruary 24, 1947 ~ August 29, 2017Corral de TierraPhillip Jeffrey Balma died on August 29, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was born on February 24, 1947 in London, England to Nobile (Martin) and Josephine Balma. The family, which included brothers Dennis and Mark, emigrated to the U.S in 1952. Phil came to California in 1965 to attend UC Berkeley, graduated from UC Riverside and later received his master's degree in computer science from the University of Oregon. He wrote software and managed projects for CTB/McGraw-Hill, the Naval Postgraduate School, Digital Research, Novell, Sony, Ricoh and SanDisk. Phil had many interests and continued learning throughout his life. A very accomplished and creative cook, he was known for his ability to enter anyone's kitchen and prepare a memorable meal. He loved to travel and made friends around the world. He valued and nurtured those friendships and he will be greatly missed. Phil is survived by his wife, Maxine; son, Daniel, daughter-in-law, Jessica and grandchildren, Colton, Ryan, and Kira, all of Corral de Tierra; brothers, Dennis (Brenda) of New Jersey and Mark (Kelley) of San Diego; uncle, Mario Balma (Norma) of New York and in-laws Elfreida and Craig Fassler of Healdsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Ryan Balma. Private interment will be at El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove, CA. A Celebration of Life will held on October 8.
