Odus Toney LoganMay 12, 2017 - October 16, 2017Odus Toney "O.T." Logan passed away peacefully at his home in Salem, OR on Monday, October 16, 2017. The only child of James Odus Logan and Cora McNeal Logan, Toney was born on May 12, 1921 in Bokchito, OK. He grew up in Texas and Louisiana, graduating from Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA, where he met his future bride, Betty Jeanne Brooks. They were married on July 7, 1940, and had four children - Michael (Bobbi), Cheryl (Kay) Hutchison, Mitch (Julie), and Kim (Pat) Leiby. He had 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.Toney enlisted in the US Coast Guard in 1942, serving as a Signalman 2C during
WWII aboard the destroyer escort USS Menges, which was torpedoed in May, 1944 off the North African coast. Upon discharge, Toney utilized the GI Bill, graduating from Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. He and his family relocated to Salem, OR in 1948, where he began attending Willamette Law School. In 1949, expecting a second child, he left law school and joined R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He spent 34 years as a Reynolds salesman, with most of the Willamette Valley as his territory, until retiring in 1982. Wife Jeanne died in 1987, and Toney subsequently married Grace George. They were together until Grace's passing in 2012. Toney was a member of the Masons (Vista Lodge), Shriners' International (Al Kader Temple), the American Legion (Post 136), and the Destroyer Escort Sailors' Association (DESA), filling various leadership positions in many of these organizations. For decades, Toney participated in bowling leagues in and around Salem, was a member at Salem Golf Course, and enjoyed events with the Elks (BPOE).Public viewing will occur on Wednesday, October 25, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 1:30 pm, at Belcrest Memorial Garden - Mausoleum Chapel in Salem.The family thanks all the staff at Willamette Valley Hospice for their great assistance and support.
