FLINTON, Norman AultSeptember 20, 1941 – August 13, 2017Peacefully, at home on a glorious Sunday afternoon, Norm Flinton lost his long battle with Parkinson's disease. Norman was born on September 20, 1941 in Comox. By the 1950s he lived in Saltair, where he met Marian. They were best friends and partners for 53 years. Norman received his aircraft maintenance license from S.A.I.T. and started working for Standard Aero Engines in Winnipeg in 1964. He moved back to the west coast in 1965 and continued his career with Pacific Coastal Airlines in Cassidy. He then moved to South Surrey in 1966 to work for Canadian Pacific Airlines at YVR, retiring from the engine division of Canadian Airlines in 1989. Upon retirement Norm and Marian relocated back to Saltair where they renovated Marian's childhood home on Bestview Road, their home now for over 20 years. They never lived far from the ocean, except for their brief stints on the prairies. Norm enjoyed being outdoors; his gardens were always lovely and productive. Norman liked to be busy, always working on a new project in his workshop or yard. Travelling was a joy that Norm and Marian also shared. They took many trips all over the globe and toured extensively by boat and travel trailer closer to home. Hiking trips were a part of many travel itineraries, from New Zealand to Manning Park to the South Chilcotin. Many friends and relatives have fond memories of boat trips with him. Fishing and checking crab pots out front were highlights for many visitors. Norman was deeply involved in the United Church at Crescent Beach and Chemainus. He acted on the Boards in various capacities throughout his life and served the wider church through his roles in the Fraser and Island presbyteries. He built many long-lasting friendships that will support Marian for years to come. There was always a well-loved cat and dog in Norm's life and he leaves Julio the cat and Truffles the dog to live out their lives with Marian. He was kind, gentle and hospitable to all. He was simply known as "Unc" by many and had nicknames for all of us. Norm is survived by the love of his life, Marian, his sister Gladys Misson, brother-in-law Dave Halme/Marie, brother-in-law Dave Alexander and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Eric and Maud Flinton, sisters Isabel Vroom (Robert), June Spurling (Roger), and Nonie Alexander, brother in-law George Misson, and brother Robert Flinton (Charyl). Most profound appreciation to Dr. Manhas for facilitating Norm's tranquil crossing. We will celebrate Norm's life at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Chemainus United Church, 9814 Willow St., Chemainus, BC.
