Milo Jean "Jean" Hassell passed away on September 17, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. Jean was born on August 21, 1932 in Chuichupa, Mexico to Lyman Snow "Jack" Hassell and Thelma Turley-Hassell. He was the oldest of nine siblings. The family immigrated to Bluewater, NM when he was a young boy. Jean attended and graduated from Grants High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country during the Korean War. After attaining the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class he was honorably discharged from the service at the end of his enlistment. He returned home and attended the University of Utah where he received a Bachelors Degree in Forestry. He graduated with honors and was subsequently hired by the United States Forest Service. Jean had a long and successful career with the USFS and retired as Regional Forester. Jean was then appointed Arizona State Land Commissioner and served in the administrations of three consecutive Governors until his retirement from public service. Jean also was a member of the Arizona State Parks Board and served on the Arizona State Game and Fish Commission. Jean was preceded in death by his father Lyman and his mother Thelma. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Morefield, husband John and children Chris Morefield and wife Dianna, Adam Morefield and wife Amanda and Valerie Yeager and husband Kevin. His son Thomas Hassell, wife Yvette and their children James Cross, Coy Lowther and husband Matt and Mariah Morales and husband Thomas. His great grandchildren include Faith, Milo and Caleb Morefield, Megan Yeager and Eli and Otis Lowther. Memorial services will be held at La Paz-Graham's Funeral Home on Saturday, October 7 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Ikard's Cancer Center and Mesilla Valley Hospice/La Posada Assisted Living Center.
