Mildred Ruth Bloomer (nee Wickert) of the Tawas area passed away peacefully at her home in Tawas on Friday. April 27, 2012, age 92. Mildred was born on Oct. 9, 1919 in Eyebrow, Saskatchewan, Canada to Albert E. and Pearl J. (nee Willard) Wickert. When she was five years old, her family left Canada and moved to Tawas. She graduated from Tawas Area High School and went on to have a very remarkable and hard working career. Mildred owned and operated the Wickert Restaurant in downtown East Tawas for a number of years. She also ran her own catering business which was named "Millies Catering." Mildred later went on to work at the Tawas Area High School where she was the head cook and supervised the food service program for many years, retiring eventually in the early 1980s. Later in her life, she managed the Tawas Beach Club until she was 80 years old. Those who knew Mildred will always remember how active and personable she was. Volunteering many countless hours of hard work and enthusiasm in the organizations she was a proud member of were very important to her. Mildred was an active member in the Odd Fellows and Rebecca, The Eastern Star, White Shriners, Amarinth American Legion, Michiganders Club and Christ Episcopal Church in East Tawas for 69 years. Mildred always looked forward to and truly enjoyed her Friday lunches with Father Dan Cannon from the church. She will be fondly remembered for cooking her famous pies. People would line up and wait for her pies at social bake sales. She also loved feeding her birds at home, especially the cardinals. Mildred is survived by her three children, Butch and Mary Loy of Alabama, Nadeen and Bob O'Meara of East Tawas and Earl and Lori Parsons of Cheboygan; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one brother, Wayne and Jane Wickert of Canada; special niece, Kim Wickert and her daughters, Kelsey and Kendra; and several more nieces and nephews, cousins, and many many dear friends. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Pearl Wickert; husband, Frank Bloomer; brothers, William and Warren Wickert; and a sister, Norma Reinke. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday May 1 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in East Tawas with Father Phil Sietz officiating. Her family will welcome friends at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Visitation for Mildred is also scheduled for Monday, April 30 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery in East Tawas on Tuesday following the funeral service. Those wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to either the Shriners Hospital or to Christ Episcopal Church.
