Michael Wayne Stewart, M.D., 78, died peacefully in Cañon City, Colo. on May 1, 2014 after a long illness. He was born on July 29, 1935, the third son born to Joseph and Mary (née Dilley). Mike was known to have an adventurous spirit as a child growing up in Salida, or that was the impression given when he talked of his many tales and escapades. His parents owned Stewart Mortuary, where he began his forensic career at an early age.Mike graduated from Salida High and continued his education at Denver University, where he was active in music and fraternity. He completed medical school at University of Colorado with a residency at University of California San Francisco.Dr. Stewart worked as a medical examiner, coroner, and forensic pathologist in Los Alamos, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ketchikan, Ala. He maintained many licensures and memberships in the medical and forensic professions. As a staff pathologist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Health Research Division, he completed research ranging from automated flow cytometry to the effects of trans-uranium elements and plutonium on man and animals. Dr. Stewart was also an integral part of developing drunk driving laws in the state of New Mexico. He took his work seriously, valued his life's work and maintained his passion for it throughout his career. He was known as a supporter of and advocate for his lab staff, remaining close to many until his death. He proved a natural teacher, whether helping with chemistry homework, building model rockets or discussing lab reports.Mike loved his children and grandchildren, felt pride in all their successes and held high hopes for their futures.Mike is survived by his wife Sue; four children: Michael David (Mary), Wayne, Susan Elizabeth, and Kim; and four dearly loved "grandbrats:" twins Sara (Chris Phillips) and Michael Ian, Alexis, and Cody. He is survived by his eldest brother Dr. Joseph Stewart of Albuquerque and predeceased by his parents and brother Dr. Robert Stewart.Dr. Stewart was laid to rest with his parents in Salida, Colo.
