BURLINGTON - Merle A. Sizer, 86, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2011, at St. Luke's Medical Center with his beloved family by his side. Merle was born on September 22, 1925, in Saskatshewan, Canada to Minnie and Alphonse Sizer. He grew up in Minneapolis, Minn., where he received his education. He served in the United States
Army during
World War II from 1944 until 1946, finishing up his assignment in Japan. Upon returning home, he married Dorothy Field on March 8, 1947. They spent their early years in Minneapolis, Minn., where Merle was employed at International Dairy Queen as a District Manager. In 1971, Merle and Dorothy purchased the Dairy Queen in Burlington. He and Dorothy, along with their children, ran the business for 18 years. After selling the Dairy Queen, he went to work for the United States Postal Service for 10 years, retiring in 1999. After retiring, Merle and Dorothy enjoyed traveling the United States in their RV making many new friends in their travels. He was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church. One of Merle's proudest moments was becoming a member of the Burlington Masonic Lodge # 28. He served as Worshipful Master in 1982. Merle is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy of 64 years; his children, Kimberly (Rick) Williams of Waterville, Minn., Kelly M. Sizer of Burlington, and Karleen (John) Vos of Burlington; and four grandchildren, Specialist E4 Daniel Lorentz, Sarah Lorentz, Chelseah (John) Heath, and Mitchell Vos. He is furthered survived by his sister, Glee (Dennis) MonChamp of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, Roger Sizer of Strum; many nieces, nephews, and friends. He loved babies and was so looking forward to the arrival of his first great-grandchild, Mason Timothy Heath, due on November 30, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Minnie; three brothers, Virgil, Douglas, and Dale; and one sister, Beverly. Funeral service will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home with Rev. Marjorie Rice Myers officiating. Burial will take place on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Southern Wisconsin Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Friday, November 11, 2011, from 4 until 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Family has suggested that memorials be made to .
