Max Olivo Hutchins1934-2016Surrounded by his loving family, Dr. Max Olivo Hutchins passed away on September 25th, 2016. Max was born on July 18th, 1934 in Oklahoma City, OK to his loving parents Adath Ward and Minnie Mae Hutchins, who preceded him in death, and is survived by his sisters Jean McCurley of Tulsa, OK and Kay Croom of Austin, TX.Dr. Hutchins is survived by his wife of 61 years Inez, and their three children, Dr. Joe and Jonell Hutchins, Larry and Nicki Hutchins, and Jay and Kris Nylund. Their eight grandchildren include William Hutchins and wife Rebecca, Sarah Hutchins Duffey and husband Tyler, Rachel, Leslie, Sydney, and Chase Hutchins, and Paul and Mark Nylund.After high school, Max enrolled in East Central University in Ada, OK, where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Biology in 1956. While in college he met his wife Inez and they were married on June 2nd, 1955. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Max enrolled in Oklahoma State University where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physiology.In 1964 he became a faculty member of the University of Texas Health Science Center at the Houston School of Dentistry. His God-given desire for teaching others persisted throughout his over 40 year career as a professor, department head, and following retirement, Professor Emeritus. He continued teaching during retirement at the University of Texas Medical School and St. Thomas University. Dr. Hutchins also served on the Texas Radiation and Safety Board from 2002 to 2007.Dr. Hutchins was steadfast in his passion for education and teaching throughout his career while actively pursuing other interests. Relentless in all his efforts, Max loved gardening, hiking, swimming, and fishing. He loved sharing his bountiful tomato harvest each year with all his family and friends. It was not uncommon for Max to swim a mile a day at either the JCC in Houston or the Comal River in New Braunfels, TX. He often enjoyed fishing in Lake Livingston and hiking throughout several national parks with his close friend Jim Patten. Always in a great mood, his greatest enjoyment, however, was watching sand supporting all of his grand children's activities. Whether the sport was baseball, basketball, soccer, or water polo, Max was everyone's number one fan.A memorial service will be held at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway, Houston, TX on Monday, Oct. 3 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception following the service. The family requests a donation in lieu of flowers to the Houston School of Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center (visit https://dentistry.uth.edu/about/giving for information)
