HIGH POINT, N.C. — Mr. (John) Max Barnes, 82, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, at the Hospice Home at High Point. He was born on May 8, 1932 in Randolph County, N.C., to John Henry Barnes and Marinda Jane Harris Barnes.

Max was a graduate of Davis-Townsend School, where he drove a school bus and played baseball. He received an associate's degree in diesel engineering from North Carolina State University. He was a truck driver doing long-distance freight with 5 million accident-free miles logged and also worked as a machinist at Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock on the U.S.S. Forrestal and U.S.S. Enterprise for their first day at sea.

He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Max was an avid deer hunter, enjoyed traveling and spent many years coaching Pee-Wee football and baseball.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Huskins Barnes on Sept. 22, 1991, whom he married on Jan. 20, 1952. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Ruby Barnes Owens.

Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Sue Barnes of Charlotte, N.C.; son, John Michael Barnes of High Point; sisters, Gertrude Wall of Thomasville, Farrist Ann Loflin and husband Bill of Thomasville, Shirley Briles and husband Harold of Trinity, Nancy Gallimore and husband Jerry of Thomasville, and Imogene Cartner of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and brothers, Weldon Barnes and wife Pat of Thomasville and Joel Barnes of Trinity.

Mr. Barnes will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the visitation.

The family will receive friends at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church fellowship hall from 1-2 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susan Mitchell, the Rev. Roger Weisner and the Rev. Richard Huskins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
