Mattie Johnson, a beloved member of the Hazel Crest, Illinois community, bid farewell to the world on January 21, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on September 21, 1949, Mattie's charismatic presence brought joy into the lives of many who knew her. She was the sixth of eight children born to Cleveland Lee Stennis and Daisy Lee Stennis. Her unwavering kindness, infectious laughter, and unwavering optimism left an indelible mark on her friends and neighbors. Mattie was a pillar of strength to others during their darkest times, providing solace and support. Her commitment to community service was unmatched, as she tirelessly volunteered her time to her hospice patients. Mattie confesseð her life to Christ at an early age and she attended the Salvation Army Church. Later in life she became a member at Faith in God Ministries where she served on the Usher under the leadership of Pastor Natcha Fleming. Afterwards, she joined and remained a faithful member of Faith Movers Church in University Park Il under the leadership of Moses B Herring Sr. where she served on the Usher/Host ministry. Her favorite scripture was "l can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13.
She graduated from Wells High School and shortly after married Leroy Johnson Sr. in 1968. To this union three children were born Leroy, Rodney and Joscelyn. After raising her children , she went to DuPage Community College and became a Certified Nursing Assistant. She started out working at Westmont Covalence Home and later her passion led her to start working with Vitas Hospice where she dedicated more than 23 years of faithful service. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have encountered her radiant spirit. She will also be remembered for her passion for taking care and helping strangers, her creativity, ability to decorate, gardening and the gift of gab will never be forgotten. Mattie joins into eternity with her mother, father, three brothers, three sisters, her youngest son and granddaughter who all preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn and cherish her memories son Leroy, daughter Joscelyn, brother Napolean, adoptive sisters Bernadean lvy and Natcha Fleming and a very special nephew Sonny. Fourteen grandchildren, Cordell, Nakita, Daniel, Joscelyn, Ta'kayla, Arron, Naomi, Asher, Reginald Jr, Jakobee, Azarreya, kimara, Danika and Nakia- Marie. Eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly.
