Matthew John Joseph BurnsCastleton - Burns, Matthew John Joseph ("Matt") of Castleton, NY passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017 following a long illness.Matthew was born on May 27, 1929 in Rensselaer, NY to the late Matthew Joseph and Elizabeth Bertha (Lawlor) Burns. He graduated from St. John's High School in Rensselaer in 1946, from Siena College in 1951 and later received his Masters degree from Syracuse University. On February 19, 1955 he married the former Mary Constance Nalley in Rensselaer. Matt was employed as an engineer for GE Corporation in Manhattan, the Watervliet Arsenal in Menands, NY and IBM Corporation in Yorktown, Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill, NY where he retired after thirty seven years of service. He was a parishioner of the Church of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph in Rensselaer, NY for over forty years and a parishioner of St. Peter's Parish in Hyde Park, NY for forty years where he taught CCD. He was also a member of the Hyde Park Knights of Columbus Council 6111 and was an elected Grand Knight and a District Deputy.Matt grew up spending his summers at the family camp on Burden Lake where he loved spending time with his extended family and teaching his girls how to swim, fish and ski. He was very proud of his "four girls". He enjoyed wood working immensely and quickly learned that he had to make four of everything. Matt was predeceased by his wife of fifty-nine years, Connie and a sister, Margaret Mary. He is survived by his four daughters, Mary Beth (Peter) Wagner of Hyde Park, NY, Eileen (Bryan) Mardon of Averill Park, NY, Patricia (Edward) Eidam of Mooresville, NC and Constance (James) Bitterman of Tonawonda, NY as well as two grandchildren, Shane (Katie) Mardon of Troy, NY and Erin Mardon of Latham, NY and one great grandson, Liam Ryan Mardon. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Simeon Burns (Noreen) and a sister in law (Dorothy Nalley) as well as many Burns and Nalley nieces and nephews.Viewing will be at 9am followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10am and will be held on Wednesday, October 11th at the Church of St. John the Evangelist and St Joseph, 50 Herrick St. Rensselaer, NY.A private burial service will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, NY.
