Mary Lee MoffitBattle CreekMary Lee Moffit, of Battle Creek, MI, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 with her family by her side. She was 96 years old.Mary Lee Fogleson was born on October 15, 1920 in Rochester, IN. After growing up in Indiana, she moved to Michigan where she graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. Having attended the original Western State Teachers College, she received her undergraduate and postgraduate education from Western Michigan University. In her professional career she was a beloved elementary school teacher in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Lakeview school systems for over 40 years. Among her many achievements as an educator were her dedication to her students and improving curricula, in addition to co-authoring a children's book on the history of Battle Creek.During her life, she was a member and leader of numerous organizations. Among them were the NEA/MEA Retired Teachers Organizations, one of the founding members of Alpha Beta Epsilon Teacher Scholarship Sorority at WMU, and was a friend of the Battle Creek Kimball House preservation. She was also a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and Christian Singles.Mary Lee was a voracious reader and continued to amaze her family with historical facts and stories. She was known for her love of the water, spending summers at Indian Lake and Union Lake. In recent years, she could be seen cruising Goguac Lake on her pontoon boat with son Mike and dog Millie. Everyone knew Mary Lee as the person who always remembered birthdays and special occasions. She had a special knack for picking out just the right gift. When socializing, she particularly loved planning theme parties for her close friends and playing board games. She especially enjoyed playing hours of Rummikub.She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Theodore J. Moffit; parents Harry and Alice Foglesong; brother Jerry Foglesong and wife Lyleen; and her great grandson Dustin Shaffer. Mary Lee will be dearly missed by her family. She is survived by children Luanne Cooper (Charlie) of Kalamazoo, Peg Moffit of Kalamazoo, Patrick Moffit (Maureen) of Bella Vista, AR, and Michael Moffit of Battle Creek; six grandchildren Jeff and Josh Cooper, Kristofer Moffit, Mathew Bakken, Pamela Dustman, and Sara Shaffer; and ten great grandchildren: Charles and Max Cooper; Anyaj, Graci and Bradyn Moffit; Evie Bakken; Cali and Lyndsie Woods; and Angel and Sadie Shaffer.In keeping with Mary Lee's wishes, cremation was conducted and a memorial service will be held in the springtime. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Great Lakes Caring Hospice, Bibles for Missions Thrift Center in Battle Creek, , or Battle Creek Humane Society.
