Juneau resident Mary Katherine HIllyer, 88, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2014 in Seattle, Washington. She was born on April 12, 1926 in Happy, Texas to Ery and Monie Fortney. On September 2, 1944 she married Robert "Bob" Hillyer Sr. in Texas. Mary (Katherine) worked along side her husband in many of their businesses including a skating rink, a logging company in Oregon and served as the accountant for Hillyer Construction and Hillyer Enterprises. After moving to Juneau in 1975, she worked in accounting for Homemakers of Alaska and Public Safety before retiring. Mary (Katherine) considered Juneau her home and enjoyed the many friends she made. She also enjoyed brightening up her home with hanging baskets, flowers and dahlias planted along the house.Mary (Katherine) was preceded in death by her husband Robert J. Hillyer Sr., her parents, and her brothers E M Fortney and Doyle Fortney. She is survived by a brother Bill Fortney (Clojean) of Glendora, California; a sister, Dorothy Lee Dunlap of Fontana, California and numerous nieces and nephew who adored their "Aunt Katherine." She is also survived by her children, Rye Hillyer of Abbeville, Georgia, Rob Hillyer (Valerie) of Juneau, Bonnie Ragan (Larry) of Rohnert Park, California and Alice McNeer (Cliff/Jim) McNeer of Kent, Washington as well as 11 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren and numerous friends.A memorial celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m., November 22, at the Kent Senior Center in Kent, Washington. An additional memorial celebration is being planned for Juneau in December. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to Juneau's Hospice and Home Care, 419 Sixth Street, Juneau, AK 99801.
