westfuneralhomellc.com Mary Hester Lyles passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Landsun Nursing Home at the age of 85. Mary was born on June 18, 1931 to Clyde and Rosa (Harrison) McDaniel in Dayton, NM. She graduated from Artesia High School in 1948 then went on to ENMU in Portales for two years. Her dad decided to move the family to Oregon where she met and fell in love with Malcolm. They were married on August 5, 1950 and had 66 ½ years together. As a young girl she worked in the Dayton Store and ran the mail to the train station for pickup and delivery every day. Mary was a wonderful cook, and would cook for anyone who was hungry. She worked for the Carlsbad Schools in the cafeteria, where she was in her element. She became the head cook at CHS, Pate, and P.R. Leyva. She loved her job, making sure her kids received outstanding food. She retired in 1991. Mary loved reminiscing about growing up in Dayton, where life was simple, but hard. Everyone knew each other and lifelong friendships were made. She was preceded in death by her husband Malcolm, her beloved son, Malcolm David Lyles and both parents. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn Looney and husband David of Carlsbad; granddaughters, Cari Tillman and husband Michael of Destin, FL and Randa Burkeen and husband Allan of Carlsbad and 5 great-grandchildren: Alexis Tillman, Brenna Tillman, Carsyn Tillman, Justin Hoover and Rylee Hoover.
