Born in Meridian Mississippi on October 19, 1942, she was the second child of four siblings Laverne “Skeeter” Willis, Sr. Clara McGraw, and Catherine Matthews-Beachem. They all preceded her except for Catherine Matthews- Beachem. She was born to the late Eloncy and Clara Matthews. Mary was educated in Meridian Public-School System and graduated from Harris High School where she excelled in academics and enjoyed being a member of the cheerleading squad. Upon graduating High School Mary married James Clark and they had three children Avis, Cedric and Bryan (deceased).
Mary and James moved their family to Detroit, Michigan in the late 1960’s, another child was added to the family Shaun. Mary was a caring, loving spirit with an extraordinarily strong character. She would rely heavily on these talents as she faced life challenges as a single parent raising four children while overseeing the growth of her youngest sister Catherine who was also part of her home.
To improve her family situation Mary, look to education. Taking care of her family by day and taking even classes at night. Mary attending Detroit College of Business in Dearborn, Michigan where she studied Business Administration which she enjoyed and met a few life-long friends. Mary also attended Essex County College in New Jersey where she studied Accounting.
Mary found teaching as a profession and would later return to Detroit College of Business to teach business. Returning to her hometown of Meridian during her retirement years she worked as a teacher’s assistant at West Hill Elementary school. She was also volunteering at Anderson Hospital.
Mary love to travel and visit family. She was the best domestic traveler there was. Detroit, New Jersey, Virginia, Oklahoma to name a few places she would frequently visit.
Mary is survived by (3) children, Avis Clark, Cedric Clark and Shaun Clark. (1) sister Catherine Matthews-Beachem. (10) Grandchildren Jasmine Clark, Christopher Clark Sr. Dorian Clark, David Clark, Ariel Clark, Taylor Clark, Anthony Anderson, Chelsea Clark, and Ana Zozimo. (3) Great-Grandchildren Dynver Clark, Ramya Gatling, Christopher Clark Jr. and a host of family and friends.
