MARY ELIZABETH "BETTY" ENGELS, 100 FREEPORT - Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Engels, 100, of Freeport, died Saturday, July 4, 2015 at Presence St. Joseph Home in Freeport, surrounded by her family. Betty was born on July 28, 1914 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Nina (Huett) Shultz. Betty graduated from Warren High School in 1933 where she was the Valedictorian. On October 7, 1944 she married Vernon A. Engels in Freeport. Mr. Engels passed away on August 14, 1995. She worked for 30 years as a secretary in the States Attorney Office of Stephenson County. Betty was a member of Zion Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed flowers, reading, and cheering on the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. Surviving are 2 sons, Richard (Noelle Downey) Engels of Freeport and Robert (Susan Kruger) Engels of McConnell; 4 grandchildren, Douglas (Camie) Engels of Monroe, WI., Mattie Engels of Garland, TX., Christina Kruger of Decatur, and Kevin Engels of McConnell. Also surviving are 2 great-grandchildren, Macie and Brenna. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Robert; and daughter-in-law, Sandra. Cremation rites have been accorded.
