Mary Ann Vande VoorenRedding, CA1943 - 2017Mary Ann Vande Vooren, age 74, passed away Friday September 1, 2017, after a 7 year battle with cancer. Mary was born on January 9, 1943 in Bellflower, CA, the daughter of Mildred and Leland Penicks. She grew up in Downey, CA and went to high school at Downy High. She originally aspired to be a Nurse and attended Ceritos College. However, she met a boy that teased her about her sun burn and fell in love. She was married to Ken on May 18, 1963 and recently celebrated a 54th wedding anniversary. She had two devoted daughters which she was fortunate to stay home and raise. Ken and Mary moved their family from Anaheim to Redding in 1979 where she resided for the rest of her life. When her daughters were grown she joined the Redding School District as an Assistant Cook and retired after 23 years with the District. Over the years Mary enjoyed dancing, camping, knitting, crocheting, crafting, gardening, traveling with family, reading, puzzles, water skiing and bowling in her younger days, and of course spoiling her grandsons, Matthew and Nathan. One of her favorite times with family and friends was the annual camping trip to Jedidiah
Smith Redwood State Park where they traveled for over 22 years. She was also passionate about Elvis and in 2012 traveled to Graceland with her daughters. She loved taking dancing lessons with Ken over the years where country line dancing was one of her favorites. In 2014, she adopted a rescue dog, Hydro, that became her favorite third child. Mary is survived by her husband Ken Vande Vooren, daughters Patty Moskalik (Kelly Moskalik) and Peggy Vande Vooren, father Leland Penicks, sister Wanda Webster (Ron Webster), grandsons Matthew and Nathan Lisenby, dog Hydro, and her three fury grandogs Sierra, Bruiser and Sasha.
