Martin J. GroomMartin J. Groom LMSW, CADC age 53 of Bellevue passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016 unexpectedly at his home. He was born on January 28, 1963 son of Thomas and Janet (Martin) Groom Sr. in Ann Arbor. On May 18, 1996 he married Jan Shaw on their family farm in Bellevue with a traditional Mohawk Native American service. He graduated from South Lyon High School Class of 1981.Martin received his undergraduate at Spring Arbor University and received his Master's Degree in Social Work from Western Michigan University. Martin was the Director of Psychological Health for The Air National Guard in Battle Creek and was previously The Director of Psychological Health for the Army National Guard and also had his private practice (Mental Health Counseling) in Lansing. Martin was a Professor at Western Michigan University and Michigan State University. He also owned and operated Red Willow Horse Farm with his wife Jan in Bellevue. Martin enjoyed horseshoeing (he was the second generation farrier), working around his farm, joking with people, Harry Potter, playing the violin, but most of all spending time with his granddaughters Lydiah, Vada and Brylee. He was a well-rounded kind, caring, and spiritual person who loved to help others. He was a member of Kalamo Masonic Lodge #327 where he was past Master, a York Rite Mason and Scottish Rite 32 Degree Mason.Surviving Martin are his wife Jan Shaw-Groom of Bellevue; son, Matthew (Tracy) Buchanan of Bellevue; granddaughters, Lydiah, Vada, and Brylee Buchanan; mother, Janet Groom of South Lyon; brother Thomas Groom Jr. of South Lyon; sisters, Charlotte (Brian) Fulkerson, Janine Asher; sister-in-law, Joan (Charlie) Franks of Bellevue; special brother- in- law, Terry Shaw of Bellevue; sister-in-law, Angie Shaw; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Groom Sr.Relatives and friends will be received from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at the Kempf Family Funeral Homes Marshall Chapel 723 Old US 27 N. Marshall, MI 49068. A celebration of Martin's life will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the funeral home with Chaplin Greg Van Heukelom of Air National Guard officiating. Masonic Funeral Rites will also be held during the service by the Kalamo Lodge #327. Cremation will follow the services.Memorial contributions may be made to the Kalamo Masonic Lodge or the Air National Guard Family Support. Assistance with memorials is available at the Funeral Home.
