Zakowski, Marie PearlMarie Pearl Zakowski, 91, Suamico, died Tuesday, December 27, 2016. She was born on July 23, 1925, in Eagle River to Fremont "Monty" and Henrietta (Reshendorfer) West. Marie graduated from Eagle River High School and at 20 years of age, enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Because World War II ended August 15, 1945, she was honorably discharged without training. She moved to Green Bay as a young woman. Marie once entered the canning division competition at the Brown County Fair, winning many awards including 3 lbs. of sugar, 3 lbs. of brown sugar and her photo in the newspaper. On July 2, 1949, she married Arnold Zakowski at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Arnold preceded her in death January 13, 1975. Marie was a baker at Bay Port High School where the students affectionately called her "Ma" until her retirement in 1991. She was an active member at St. Benedict Parish, serving on the parish council, as an office holder in the Altar Rosary Society, working in the church and in the rectory, at church picnics and funeral luncheons. Marie was a member of the VFW Auxiliary #9409 and assisted with local Cub Scout Troops. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and making pillowcase dolls. Survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law: Wayne Zakowski, Boulder, CO; Gene Zakowski, Suamico; Robert and Cherie Zakowski, Denver, CO; nine grandchildren, Kristine, Carolyn, Tim, Matthew, Alexander, Mike, Leah, John and Nickolas; two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Gavin; one brother, Ray West and his wife, Mary; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Roger (Eleanor) Zakowski, Mrs. John (Julia) Posluszny, Mrs. Pete (Elisabeth) Zakowski, Mrs. Zeke (Shirley) Zakowski; other relatives and friends.She was also preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arnold; a son, Lawrence; and three brothers, William West, Fremont West, and Franklin West.Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday. Friends may also call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 3370 Deerfield West, Suamico. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11a.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at the church with Rev. Everard Scesney, O.F.M., officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Suamico.
