Mr. Lonnie J. "L.J." Tanner, 73 of Mayo died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the Lafayette Health Care Nursing Facility in Mayo following an extended illness. He was born on July 7, 1935 as the oldest son to the late Jackson "J.B." and Pearl Roberts Tanner. Mr. Tanner was raised in the Fort White area and graduated from Fort White High School in 1954. He married Roberta Adel Johnston in 1956 and together they had five children. Mr. Tanner worked with the Florida State Park Service for ten years and with the Florida Department of Corrections for twenty eight years before retiring in 1995. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Taylor in 2004. Mr. Tanner is survived by his wife, Roberta Tanner, Mayo, four children, Karen (Harmon) Chandler, O'Brien, Sandra Herringshaw, Janet Wilson, and James Lonnie (Annette) Tanner all of Mayo, fifteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Three brothers, Bart (Connie) Tanner, Lake Butler, Archie (Ruby) Tanner, Starke and Eugene "Duck" (Ann) Tanner, Fort White, four sisters, Lorine Edwards, Fort White, Marie (Royce) Shaw, Lulu, Sarah Pearl (Jerry) Edwards, Lake City, Nancy (Bobby) Stalnaker, Fort White and Diane Keene, Lulu also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Tanner will be conducted on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the Philippi Baptist Church on CR 18 south of Lake City with Rev. Charlie Walker, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Mayo officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8:00 P.M.
