Lois A. Schirmer, age 86, a 50-year resident of East Tawas, died on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at Lakeview Manor Nursing Home in Tawas City. She was born on November 5, 1922, in Detroit to the late Irvin and Hazel Bowers (nee Smith). Lois was a member of the National Honor Society and graduate of Rochester High School. She married John E. Schirmer on August 17, 1946. He preceded her in death on April 26, 2007, after 60 years of marriage. She worked for several years for Tawas Area Schools as a bus driver and later as a courier for Huron Community Bank before retiring in 1982. Lois was a member of the Tawas United Methodist Church and Ladies Auxiliary. She served in the Mary Martha and Grace circles at the church and was a Sunday school teacher. She also volunteered at Tawas St. Joseph Hospital. Lois enjoyed reading, crafts and spending time with her family. She is survived by five sons and three daughters, David and wife Deann of Tawas City, Jonathan and wife Debra of Oscoda, Linda Wright and husband Patrick of Stockbridge, Melissa Schirmer of Madison Heights, Mark and wife Susan of Stevensville, Timothy and wife Mindy of East Tawas, Victoria Dickinson and husband Brian of Papillion, Neb., and Stephen and wife Leisa of Saginaw; 16 grandchildren, Deana, Deborah, Michelle, Jonathan Jr., Amy, Kelley, Kim, John, Desiree, Kristen, Alyse, Nicholas, Samantha, Alexandra, Jake and Cooper; and 17 great-grandchildren, Taylor Mae, Jayden, Joel, David Lee, Paige, Bailey, Mason, Grace, Max, Kaden, Aidan, Nicholas, Logan, Bradley, Zachary, Jillian and Chelsi. In addition to her husband and parents, Lois was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold and Robert; and sister, Roberta. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 1, 11 a.m., at Tawas United Methodist Church. If desired, memorial contributions may be directed to the church. Arrangements are by Buresh and Kobs Funeral Home in Tawas City.
