Lewis R. ForrestGrimesLewis R. Forrest, 85, of Grimes, passed away on April 5, 2017 at Kennybrook Village. Services: 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Merle Hay Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday after 9:30 a.m., until the start of the service, at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Chapel Hill Cemetery.Lewis was born on October 22, 1931 in Chicago, IL and moved to Des Moines as a youth. He graduated from Tech High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War. On August 29, 1954, he married Carol Sue Evans. He diligently worked as a master craftsman bricklayer for Forrest & Associate, until his early retirement in 1981. He was a 50 year Gold Card member of Bricklayers Local 3, IA. He played men's softball, bowled, and served as a pit crewman for NASCAR. He enjoyed racing on every level and was part owner in 3 late stocks in the 1960's. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, St. Louis Cardinal's, and Minnesota Vikings fan. He and Carol were RV enthusiasts. He was a devoted father, brother, and grandfather, and great grandfather, and enjoyed spending time with his family.Lewis is survived by his son Jeff (Tammy) Forrest and daughter Tracy Strom (Dave Dowie); his grandchildren Sara (Brady), AJ (Tyne), Kelli (Kyle), Brett (Eden), Brian (Maggie), Jeremy (Danika), Missy, Leigh, and Travis (Melissa); and great grandchildren Harper, Taylor, Ryleigh, Jaxson, Ari, Chloe, and Will; two sisters Nancy Fagen and Helen Dix of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his wife Carol, parents, and three brothers Elmore, Dale, and LeRoy.Memorials may be directed to the family.Online condolences can be left at www.iowafuneralplanning.com.
