Poelvoorde, Leon G.Leon G. Poelvoorde, 92, of Newfield, NY died January 22, 2017, at the hospicare Residence after a brief illness. The son of Alois and Yvonne Poelvoorde, Leon was born on February 25, 1924, and lived his entire life in Newfield, growing up on the family farm on Millard Hill Road then venturing off to raise a family in Trumbulls Corners. His love of the outdoors and life on a farm shaped his adult life. Leon was never idle and worked hard each day, rising before dawn to set off to work and returning just in time for supper. He spent most of his working years as a plant manager for Landstrom's Sand and Gravel. In the mid-1970s he joined the Town of Ithaca Highway Department, retiring in the mid-1980s. Leon was always ready to lend a helping hand to friends and family and when he wasn't working on a project he was gardening, hunting, fishing or trapping. He loved to share stories about his adventures and bent many a friendly ear along his life's journey. Leon is survived by his daughter Sue and son-in-law Don Murray of Trumansburg, NY; daughter April of McKinney, TX; sister Julienne Trautner, PA; brothers Robert (Adele) Poelvoorde, CA and Marshall (Yoshie) Poelvoorde, FL; step-grandsons Dan (Marci) Murray, CA and DJ Murray (Jeanyne Demuth), CA; many nieces and nephews and so many wonderful friends who became family to him. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Carrie, brother Albert and sister Evelyn. In keeping with Leon's wishes, there will be no services. He and his family ask that you celebrate his life with a walk in the woods or share a story about how you got to know Leon during your life. Donations in Leon's memory can be made to Hospicare, 172 East King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850, or the Newfield Fire & Rescue Department, 77 Main Street, Newfield, NY 14867, where he was a life-long supporter. The family would like to thank the 4th Floor North staff at Cayuga Medical Center and the angels at Hospicare for taking care of Leon during his last days.
