Leola Grace Johnson Wetzell was born on July 21, 1912 to Sylvia Harwood Johnson and Charles Henry Johnson. Leola, commonly known as Sally was born in Guthrie Township, Guthrie County, Iowa. She was the oldest of ten children. Leonard, Charles, Victor, Martin, Cecil, Dolores, Dolly, Joyce, and Gloria. All preceded her in death. She married Ray Wetzell on December 25, 1929. They were married for 53 years. Ray her husband passed away in June of 1983, at the age of 73. Leola passed away November 18, 2016 at the age of 104 years old. She is survived by her two daughters; Linda Wetzell of Springfield Oregon and Brenda Hassler, of Goshen, Oregon. Three grandchildren: Sandy Kintz, Forest Grove, Oregon; Shawn Traub, Medford, Oregon; Sheri Bray, of Goshen Oregon. Three great grandchildren: Megan Bray, Gabrella Bray, and Daniel Bray. And one great-great-grandchild, Athena Marie Maguire. Leola moved with her family to Oregon in 1920. She remembered coming over the Old McKenzie Pass as a Plank Road. They settled in the Wendling/Marcola area and later Springfield. She attended the Mable School, now the Mohawk Grange. She also attended the Stella McGladrey School in Eugene. And the Springfield School, now the Springfield Administration Building on Mill Street. Leola and her husband went through the Great Depression from 1929 to 1939. She drove wood truck in Wendling for 10 years hauling firewood. Leola helped her husband build 7 houses in the Springfield and Goshen area. She loved hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening. She was an outdoor person. She loved animals, especially cats. Leola was a member of the Goshen Assembly of God Church for many years. She also attended several other churches including the Methodist Church, the Salvation Army Church, and the Northlake Independent Christian Church in Christmas Valley, Oregon. She was a member of the Goshen Grange #561 for over 40 years. She belong to the Lane Pomona Grange #14, and took the 7th Degree for National Grange. She was also a Delegate to the Oregon State Grange session many times. She traveled to Mexico on a missionary trip. She commercial fished in Alaska. She went to the 1986 World's Fair in Vancouver, Washington. And she travel to Australia in 1997 to sightsee and visit with friends. Leola love to sing. She sang songs that her mother taught her as a little girl, like "Matilda Muggins" and "Put Me In Your Pocket". "You Are My Sunshine" was one of her favorites. She especially loved Gospel music and the old-time hymns. The last few years of her life was spent at Marquis Care Center in Springfield. She made many new friends and enjoyed food, games, parties, music, and occasional outings. She is enjoying a new life now. Leola enjoyed and endured a long life with much happiness and many hardships on Earth. She has a "Mansion Over The Hilltop" now and is waiting for us to join her in heaven.
