Leeman "Red" H. Burton, Sgt. US
Army Leeman was born on August 22, 1918 in Fate, Texas to local farmers, Leeman and Nora Burton. Our beloved father passed away on December 15, 2016 at the age of 98. Red is a veteran of
WWII and served in the US Army from 1940 1948. He was a Sergeant in the 15th Field Artillery, 2nd Infantry Division and was serving at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma when Pearl Harbor was bombed. On October 20, 1942 he boarded a ship in New York Harbor and left for Europe. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day +1 on June 7, 1944 and stayed in Europe until June of 1945. He loved to share his memories of those experiences and we would sit and listen, never hearing the same story twice. Once stateside, he re-enlisted for three more years and had the chance to return to Wisconsin where he met the love of his life, Helen Jayne "Ronnie" Rondeau in 1946. They were married on March 1, 1947. In November of 1947 they moved to Tillicum, WA. After his army tenure came to a close he worked for Lakewood Villa Plaza Safeway, where he managed the meat department and retired after 30 years. Red and Ronnie volunteered an additional 30 years of their time and talents to the American Lake Veterans' Golf course. He was preceded by his wife of 69 years, Helen Jayne, and leaves behind two sons; Jim (Diana) and Franklin (Pam); grandchildren; Leeman III, Lauren (Jack), Jacob and great-grandson, Brody. Interment with military honors will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery (18600 SE 240th Street Kent, WA 98042) on March 31, 2017 at 11:30 am. Donations in Red's name can be made to "Friends of American Lake Veterans Golf Course" PO Box 99608, Tacoma, WA 98496.
