New, Lawson of Altamonte Springs, passed away November 30, 2016, at the age of 90. Lawson was born on May 7, 1926 in Bienville, LA, to Whitten L. New and Sarah M. New (Mathews). Lawson graduated from Bienville High School in May of 1942 and enlisted in the
United States Navy June 2, 1943. He retired from the Navy June 30, 1966 with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He served aboard the USS Cummings during
WWII. He served on the USS Floyd B. Parks during the
Korean War. Other duty stations: USS Charles H. Roan, USS Talladega, USS Yellowstone, USS Cascade, NAS Memphis, TN., Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Green Cove Springs, FL., NAS Sanford, FL. After retiring from the Navy, Lawson worked at several jobs in Louisiana, Massachusetts, Florida and Puerto Rico. Lawson was preceded in death by his wife Linda (1984) and his parents. Survivors include the love of his life and best friend, Bonnie J. Hartnett, friend Evelyn Hartnett; sisters Dorlean Rhymes and Lorene Lawrence of Quitman, LA, and several nieces and nephews and many friends. Lawson has been a member of The Altamonte Chapel, UCC since 1995. He is a member of the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve Association. A visitation will be held Thursday, December 8, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00, and a funeral service will be held at 11:00 all at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home.
