Laurie NelsonLaurie Kay Nelson entered into the presence of God on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Her visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Laurie was born on November 15, 1955 to Carney and Jean (Taylor) Nelson in Brookings SD. Laurie grew up in Mitchell, SD she attended Catholic School and graduate from Mitchell High School in 1974.Laurie was the oldest of seven children, her mother Jean passed away when Laurie was a young age of 12. Laurie immediately stepped in and became a second mother to her siblings, which is something her father Carney was always grateful for. In 1971, Laurie had a wonderful new addition as a step mother Maggie Moran, which brought another new baby sister to give a total of seven siblings. Laurie was united in marriage to Dwain Shay in August of 1975. They were blessed to welcome three children to this union, Jason Christopher, Michael Ryan, and Jamie Cristine.Laurie spent several years working at her Father's pharmacy as a pharmacy technician, she continued her career in pharmacy at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell until it closed. Laurie then spent the next fifteen years guiding young teens at the Training School in Plankinton, SD. Laurie followed her motherly gene seven years ago and decided to work with the disabled at Dakota Abilities in Sioux Falls, SD. Laurie was always passionate about helping and guiding those in need. Laurie was first and foremost a loving mother and Grandmother. Nothing came before her grandchildren. Laurie sole purpose in life was to be the best grandma (NannaX5) that she could be to her grandchildren, and she accomplished that. When she wasn't spoiling her grandchildren Laurie enjoyed reading, shopping and gardening. She loved flowers, and loved to watch them blossom just like her grandchildren. Laurie is survived by her three children, Jason (Sarah) Shay, Michael (Aaron) Shay, Jamie (Jose) Shay. Five Grandchildren Aiden Shay, Nolin Shay, Hudson Shay, Lennon Shay, and Jamison Shay. Seven siblings Doug (Nancy) Nelson, Bob (Marsha) Nelson, Jim (Amber) Nelson, Ann (John Saville) Harless, Mary (Donn) Johnson, Jennifer Heidelberger, and Melissa (Steven) Nelson. Eleven nieces, four nephews, five great nieces and six great nephews. Laurie was preceded in death by her parents, Carney, Jean and Maggie Nelson, Niece Harper Jean Marie Gillen, Grandparents and many aunts and uncles. Laurie is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all. We find comfort in knowing that she is at peace and will be waiting for us in heaven. We love you Nanna.
