Kay Shertzer72, Indianapolis, passed away May 6, 2017. She was born on November 9, 1944 in Indianapolis, the daughter of Wilford and Zola (Yaw) Poland. After raising her family, Kay returned to school to become a registered nurse. She had a long nursing career with both Wishard Memorial Hospital and the Roudebush VA Hospital. Kay was the head nurse on the heart team at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis, and was the first nurse to assist in a heart transplant at the hospital, which at the time took 17-18 hours. During her nursing career, she was published in the American Medical Journal and also authored medical pamphlets.Kay was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She loved to ski, knit, read, and exercise. Kay was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Carr, and her parents.She is survived by her children, Lorne Shertzer, Laura Shertzer, and Tamara Metheny; her grandchildren, Justin Sanders, Brandon Thompson, and Tylor Blake, as well as two additional grandchildren; her two great-grandchildren, as well as one to be expected; her brother, Marc Poland (Leeann); and her former husband, David Shertzer.Services will be on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 3 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan- Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. W.
