Katherine HalebianHALEBIAN, Katherine, a longtime resident of Englewood Cliffs, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on May 15th. She was born on November 16, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan. Her parents were Osanna (Essayian) and Garabed Sarafian. The family, with sister Lucy and brother Edward moved to Los Angeles in 1944. She graduated from Polytechnic High School and worked in the silver department of May Company before moving east to marry Michael Halebian in 1949. They were married for almost 65 years, until his death in 2014. She is survived by their four loving children, John (wife Lisa), Michael, Carol, Edward, and two cherished grandchildren Samantha and Jackson; also her brother Edward Saraffian, sister-in-law Alice Bendian, brother-in-law Harry Chakmakian and many loving nieces and nephews. Katherine was very proud of her Armenian heritage. She enjoyed attending church events and was especially dedicated to The Evereg-Fenesse Educational Society, a charitable organization that provides scholarship assistance to descendants of the two Armenian towns in Turkey for which it is named. Katherine served as New York chapter president for many years. She was also a member of St. Leon Armenian Church in Fair Lawn.Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 18th from 5-8PM with a religious service at 7PM, at St. Leon Armenian Church, 12-61 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, N.J. 07410. Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday, May 19th at 10AM at St. Leon Armenian Church. Interment following to Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, N.Y. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Leon Armenian Church, 12-61 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn, N.J. 07410.
